Getting here
Arriving by car
From Chania airport the drive takes about 2 hours; the last stretch is a paved road down from Rodakino. Park behind the house and cross the gravel yard to the terrace.
With a car, the village and the rest of the coast are a short drive away. Rethymno is about an hour, Heraklion airport about two and a half. An airport transfer can be arranged at extra cost.
The coast faces south onto open sea. On windy days, check the conditions before swimming or going out by boat.
The name
Named after the caves next door.
Three sea caves open in the rock beside the house, just past the end of the beach. Ask us how to reach them on a calm day. Past the headland is Klimata, with a small fishing harbour.
Up the hill
Bread, groceries and tavernas
Ano and Kato Rodakino sit at the mouth of a gorge below Mount Kryoneritis, among olive groves. The lower village has a supermarket, a bakery and tavernas. For a pharmacy, a cash machine, doctors and bigger supermarkets, go to Plakias.
The E4 long-distance path starts in Kato Rodakino and climbs north towards Alones. Opening hours in the village shorten outside summer. Ask us which tavernas are open for your dates.

Ammoudaki
About 16 km east
A small sandy cove over the rocks from Damnoni, sheltered and clear, and quieter than the big bay next door.
Preveli
About 20 km east, to the car park above the beach
A protected palm forest where the river meets the sea, with freshwater pools among the reeds a short walk inland. There are no sunbeds, and the beach is reached on foot.
Chora Sfakion
About 26 km west
The harbour town of Sfakia, where the boats leave for Loutro and Sweet Water Beach. Stay for lunch on the waterfront and order sfakianopita, a thin cheese pie served with honey.
Sweet Water Beach
About 26 km west, then by boat
A pebble cove under steep cliffs, called Glyka Nera for the fresh water that seeps up through the stones. Reach it by boat, or on foot along the clifftop path.
Agios Pavlos
About 55 km east
Sand dunes 25 to 30 metres high above a bay at Cape Melissa, a ten-minute walk from the village beach. A few umbrellas, shade in the rock caves, and waves on days with a west wind.
Frangokastello
About 13 km west
A Venetian fortress on the shore, with the beaches of Orthi Ammos and Vatalos close by.
Kourtaliotiko Gorge
About 19 km north-east
Rock walls up to 600 metres and a waterfall that runs all year. Check access before you go.
Preveli Monastery
About 21 km east
Still active, and dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, whose feast falls on 8 May.
Loutro
About 26 km west, then by boat
A white village on a clear bay with no road in. The boat from Chora Sfakion takes you there.
Imbros Gorge
About 35 km west, to Imbros village
A walk of about 8 km, mostly downhill, between high rock walls from Imbros village towards the coast at Komitades.
